If you ever need to get from Georgia to Maine, let me give you a hint. It’s over 2,000 miles, so don’t walk! There’s got to be a better way, with one important caveat. It was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

The main concerns of most Thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail center around their next re-supply and water stop, as well as finding a ride into town to take a shower and do laundry once a week. As a Section Hiker using six wheels, mine were very different. I worried about finding the next trailhead parking area and keeping my motorcycle upright on dirt and gravel roads. They formed groups going in the same direction while I passed them hiking the opposite way. They often stopped to pitch their tents in the woods wherever they wanted and I had an embarrassing aversion to sleeping alone in the woods, as well as an unreasonable fear of heights. I forgot my motorcycle helmet at home, hiked for an entire day in the wrong direction, and fell asleep in a shelter one night certain I would never get off the mountain I had climbed that day.

So how was it that I passed the same people often enough to form friendships that will last a lifetime and had stories interesting enough to tell them? The wilderness created the environment but the people I met along the way, as well as our struggles and triumphs, reveal the answer. They accepted me, gave me my trail name, and the adventures of Sixwheel on the Appalachian Trail came to life. I never intended to write a book, and yet here it is.
